Branched Drain with Wash-Water

Constructed 2007 in Oakland, CA

  • Goals: Reuse the washing machine water to irrigate water loving bamboo clumps which will eventually block the view of the next door abandoned building.
  • Site description: Washing machine located on the first floor, garden and bamboo outside laundry entrance.
  • Fixtures and output: Front loading washing machine used by two household, one with two children (6 people total)-10gallons/load, about 10 loads a week
  • Cost: $125 on the jandy valve, pvc pipes, backflow preventer, glue and other fittings.

Water flow:

A jandy three way ball valve is inserted into the drain for the washer. The wash water can either drain into the utility sink (on left) that drains to the sewer, or travel through the greywater pipe (on right) that goes outside to the bamboo.

The greywater pipe leaves the house and goes through a backflow preventer before being burried under the ground. The pipe travels a short distance buried, dropping 1/4 per foot.

backflow preventer

When the pipe reaches the bamboo clumps  it is stepped down from 3/4" to a 1/2" line. It then flows into 6 buckets that infiltrate the greywater into the ground at the base of the bamboo. The buckets have the bottoms cut off and a small amount of gravel and hay at the bottom. The  ends have caps put on and drilled to make the flow even. (Before the end-caps were installed the water came out of the first two buckets only. Now the water comes out of all six buckets.)

infiltrator

Each infiltrator bucket has a lid that normally covers it to prevent dirt and leaves from filling the area.  The buckets are hidden behind the large bamboo.

All the bamboo in the back is watered entirely with the greywater. The bamboo in buckets seen in front are not.  greywatered bamboo
  • Specifications and Notes:  When diapers are washed the greywater valve is switched to the sewer side. The laundry soap used is biodegradable, low in salts, and does not contain boron (borax).
  • Maintenance and trouble shooting: None so far.
